Postmodernism Research

Postmodernism is an art movement which originated in the 1950’s after the modernism art movement. The movement is about people reusing things we already know to create meaning, because of this postmodernism tends to include elements of surrealism. People describe it as looking through a window into the window.

Cindy Sherman is an American photographer who is described as a master of socially critical photography. Her work is based around self-portraits and theatrical role playing. She therefore uses makeup, costumes and stage scenery to recreate illusions or iconic pictures. Her pictures all have social meaning behind them such as self-confidence. The image below is taken surrounding buildings which makes it iconic. She is looking frustrated despite looking smart and elegant. This could represent feminism and the time the photograph was taken in the 1970’s. I will recreate this image by taking a picture of my model looking annoyed and photoshop her onto a popular background. This is postmodernism because this is something you would see every day.

Alex box is a makeup artist and photographer who is known for her often surreal beauty looks. Her work has been featured in publications such as vogue and stylist and her celebrity clients have included Lady Gaga, Kate Moss and Frank Ocean. Because her work focuses only on portraits I believe that she is aiming to represent everyone’s individuality through makeup. Her photograph below for example is about the different parts of the face you don’t see and the movement could also therefore be about hidden beauty. The image almost looks surrealistic and painted because of the use of defined makeup and the powerful reflection almost looking at you. If I was to recreate one of her pieces I would use bright makeup and a combination of props such as mirrors and makeup brushes to show the different emotions of the models and the elements that are not visible to the naked eye.
